Specialist Study ‘Media and Communication in Europe’

‘EU and the Public Sphere(s)’ - First Meeting of Specialist Study Group ‘Media and Communication in Europe’ on 17-18 November at the University of Leeds

On 17-18 November 2006, an inaugural meeting of the Specialist Study Group ‘Media and Communication in Europe’ took place in the Institute of Communications Studies (ICS) at the University of Leeds. The Director of the Jean Monnet European Centre of Excellence (JMECE), Professor Juliet Lodge, welcomed eleven young international researchers from Universities in Ireland, the Netherlands, Spain and the United Kingdom. As part of the theme ‘EU and the Public Sphere(s)’ keynote speaker Geoffrey Martin, from the Commonwealth Secretariat, was kick starting the discussion on the need for a European public sphere with his talk on ‘Communicating Europe’, sharing his work experience in the European Commission with students and ICS staff members. Another highlight of the meeting was a public lecture of EU Commissioner for Regional Policy, Danuta Hubner who talked about ‘New Directions in EU Regional Policy: the innovation and competitiveness agenda’. The Specialist Study Group was also invited to attend a networking event to meet the EU Commissioner and her Delegation which resulted in an invitation to Brussels. Furthermore, members of the Specialist Study Group presented papers in their research areas on topics such as ‘The new public space’ or ‘Vertical Europeanisation of the online public dialogue’ and the Internet. The ICS Research Director, Professor Stephen Coleman, contributed with an engaging talk on ‘Communication Studies and Europe’, addressing the issue of notions of power in the context of the European Union.

The very lively workshop discussion will be continued in a Wiki on the Specialist Study Group website to involve all 40 members and a follow-up meeting is planned for March 2007.
