Thematic Workshop: JCER Special Issue 2008 ‘Media and Communication in Europe: Babel Revisited’

By admin | May 18, 2008

10 April 2008, Centre for the Study of Ethnicity and Citizenship, University of Bristol

The UACES Student Forum Specialist Study Group ‘Media and Communication in Europe’ organised a one-day thematic workshop in preparation of the forthcoming JCER | Journal for Contemporary European Research Special Issue 2008 ‘Media and Communication in Europe: Babel revisited’ held at the Centre for the Study of Ethnicity and Citizenship at the University of Bristol. The initial call for papers resulted in a large number of responses and expressions of interest from both junior and senior European scholars as well as academics in Australia and the U.S.A. The workshop, held on 10 April 2008, attracted 20 international scholars from Universities in Belgium, Denmark, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, and the U.K. The furthest traveller to attend the workshop was Alina Hogea from Temple University in Philadelphia who presented a paper on “The Public Sphere and Collective Identity in the European Union – Kosovo’s Independence in the European Media.” The workshop format allowed scholars to use the intimate and intense working environment to give each other feedback, to revise and reflect on their future articles. As a special feature each participant received written feedback from each scholar in one of the thematic groups.

The workshop, organised by Study Group members Dr. Asimina Michailidou (University of Bristol) and Agnes I. Schneeberger (University of Leeds), comprised an introductory session by Professor Paul Statham (University of Bristol), a plenary and question and answer session with JCER editor Dr. Eamonn Butler (University of Glasgow), and four parallel workshop sessions on specialised themes including Internet, Identity, Language and the Public Sphere.

The opening presentation by Professor Paul Statham reflected on the European public sphere, the transformation of political processes through Europeanised communication and responses of civil society to institutional actions. The session held by Dr. Eamonn Butler informed workshop participants about JCER, the publishing process and comprised a workshop session on how to publish research work as a journal article and a feedback, questions and answers session. The parallel workshop sessions were divided in four groups where participants had the chance to give each other feedback on their working papers. The first group focused on EU and the Internet with papers addressing issues such as the European web sphere and organised interests, EU communication in the Facebook era, the European communications gap, online diasporas, and digital divides. The Identity group dealt with news coverage of Turkish EU Membership, the construction of European identity in modern mass media, cultural borders and border identities. The language group addressed language barriers, emerging multilingual arenas, and linguistic minorities. The Public Sphere group focused on public spheres and collective identities and actions, discursive dynamics in the public spheres and biometrics in the European public space.

The JCER special issue ‘Media and Communication in Europe: Babel revisited’ is guest edited by Dr. Katharine Sarikakis (University of Leeds), Agnes I. Schneeberger (University of Leeds), and Daithí Mac Síthigh (Trinity College, Dublin). The special issue will be published in December 2008.
